First innings lead and notable performance by DS Murthy, Ashokakanda Jena and Madan Mohanty proved futile as Orissa lost to Bihar by 51 runs in their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur today. This was Orissa’s seventh defeat in 10 Ranji Trophy matches against Bihar.
Orissa took a 106-run first-innings lead by making 197, in reply to 91 by host Bihar, who chose to bat after winning to the toss. But the home team bounced back in the second innings to muster 344, thanks to a century by century captain Rajendranath Sanyal and half-century each by Sudhir Das and Kanu Chakravarthy.
Orissa lost the match as they folded up for 187 in the second innings, while chasing a challenging target of 239. Among Orissa players who put up notable performance, DS Murthy bagged nine wickets in the match, including five in the first innings, Ashokanda Jena top scored with 70 in the first innings and Madan Mohanty hit 32 and 53 in his two innings.
